Bio

Elizabeth Shepherd’s music is less about following a particular tradition than it is about expressing a creative spirit; she is an artist looking to share her take on the world. Which is not surprising coming from someone who grew up in a highly musical family, living all over Canada and France, played tenor horn in the Salvation Army brass band where her parents were ministers, had an early love-affair with hip-hop music, only to wind up studying French poetry, and eventually, classical and jazz piano at McGill University.

Her multiple industry accolades have landed her 2 Juno nominations (Canada’s Grammy equivalent), tours in Europe and across and North America, Japan, and most recently, a show at the legendary Hollywood Bowl with Jamie Cullum & Count Basie Orchestra. Fans and critics have drawn comparisons to the likes of Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, and Rickie Lee Jones. And what these names all share is both an accessibility and a distinctness – that quality people can’t quite pin down.

Depending on what the song calls for, Shepherd always draws upon her roots – be it Salvation Army origins, poetic singer-songwriter lyricism, the modal inflections of world music, simple and sassy pop, infectiously deep hip-hop grooves, or the harmonic complexities of jazz. Her tunes are always a departure from convention; yet one never has the sense of leaving the home she weaves on stage and invites us to be part of.

PETER TOSH 65TH BIRTHDAY

Equal rights was major focus of Artist’s life and work Los Angeles, CA 16 October 2009 – In honor of Reggae superstar Peter Tosh’s 65th birthday on Monday, October 19th, the Tosh family is creating www.officialpetertosh.com, and encouraging Peter Tosh fans around the world to celebrate with the Tosh family by speaking up for equal rights. Tosh’s efforts to bring the attention of the world to oppressed people in every corner of the earth were expressed in many of his hits such as “Mama Africa”, “Equal Rights”, “Fight On,” and “Not Gonna Give It Up”. To commemorate Peter’s 65th birthday celebration, the Tosh family would like to invite fans to visit sites such as Amnesty International at http://www.amnesty.org, ONE.org http://ONE.org , The Human Rights Campaign at www.hrc.org and other organizations that are working to achieve equal rights for all people around the world.

Peter Tosh is one of the most important and influential Reggae artists of all time. He first rose to prominence as a founding member of Bob Marley and the Wailers in 1970, when the group signed to Island Records. That same year, they released the classic reggae albums Catch A Fire and Burnin’. Tosh left the group in 1974, and released his debut solo record, Legalize It in 1976. During his life and prolific career, Tosh was an outspoken supporter of efforts to legalize marijuana. He also was an anti-apartheid activist and an ardent anti- nuclear activist. Peter Tosh’s message is as relevant today as it was when he was alive. Yet, given the current disparity between the poor and wealthy in most of the world, the racism and hate that is sadly still thriving, and the continued proliferation of nuclear weapons, Tosh’s work is not finished.

Please support and honor Peter Tosh’s memory by posting links on your site this Monday, October 19, to ONE.org, which works to forgive debt and develop functional economies in Africa, hrc.org which fights for equal rights for all people, and Amnesty International or a similar organization, and directing visitors to visit www.officialpetertosh.com to find out more about Reggae legend Peter Tosh, his music, and his works.

JSB_Bomber_Horseshoe_jun5_web.jpg picture by jaydawg420

The Jimmy Swift Band is: Craig Mercer – vocals/guitars, Aaron Collier – keyboards, Mike MacDougall – bass, Doug Cameron – drums

Contact: Jay Cleary: 416-877-4075 jay.cleary@gmail.com, Ian McRuer : 902-209-3038 ianmcruer@gmail.com

The Jimmy Swift Band’s sound is a fusion of the best in both rock and electronic music. The result is a original and stylistic sound that is uniquely their own. Their live show is a frenzy of sweat, blood, dancing, and thrashing – all to hypnotic rhythms and an unrelenting energy that is both addictive and unstoppable.

This June the JSB launch a new live album version of their earlier 2009 DVD release, JSB – Live At The Marquee. Initially available only during performance dates, this new album carries with it all of the excitement and energy that has become known, loved and expected of the JSB across Canada and beyond.

The band is currently in session recording their fourth studio album scheduled for release in the fall of 2009. For this project the band has embraced even further the electronic elements that have always been a big part of their live show’s popularity while holding strong to their love of dirty rock and roll – its Daft Punk on Jaggermeister – Iron Maiden on Ecstasy…

The band and audience fed off of each other throughout the night making for many dramatic and climactic points. It was high-intensity and JSB never let their energy level drop. By the end of the show the crowd were throwing their arms in the air and you could tell by the dance moves that all inhibitions had been lost. The encore lasted for a half-hour and it was clear that JSB have live shows like no other.” (Exclaim Magazine review of Toronto performance at the Elmocambo – Feb 2009)

The Jimmy Swift Band is truly an anomaly within the music industry – a truly independent band that have forged their own path yet have made a living playing music. On stage their tireless energy has always been focused on the audience – on turning a Saturday night concert into an unforgettable experience. You will likely never see or hear anything like the Jimmy Swift Band anywhere else, and you will never walk away from another show feeling like you did the last time you saw the JSB.

Dear Friends

Did you ever hear the story about the Nufunk Van? In 2005-2007 – Nufunk had the use of a 1984 White VW Westfalia that acted as the company’s transportation to events, help move musical equipment and, helped bands tour around Ontario and Atlantic Canada and visited several festivals across Canada.

nufunk-fire.jpg picture by jaydawg420

Well! While on tour to Nova Scotia to The Evolve Festival http://www.evolvefestival.com in 2007 – the van mysteriously caught fire. My High Plains Drifter Band members and I had to literally escape for the lives! See more photos below! It was a massive disaster, as the band members lost all their clothes and musical gear and I personally lost my instruments, camera, cell phone, clothes and my beloved ride. We lost an estimated $25,000 worth of stuff collectively and it has been a struggle for us ever since. Luckily we have found support along the way and things are getting better all the time.

NUFUNK Concerts is proud to present Another Peter Tosh Tribute featuring an All-star line up of Canadian-Jamaican Musicians & Artists. A heartfelt tribute to the late great reggae pioneer will feature King Selah, Tanny Meadows and Empress Iniffa (from the Jimmy Cliff Band) backed by the House of David Gang, and joined by DJ Patrick Roots (CIUT 89.5FM) and Vancouver, BC based Rasta Reuben & Selassie I Power.

The tragic and premature death of Peter Tosh on September 11, 1987 has robbed the world of a great reggae artist and political activist. Peter Tosh was one of the most militant reggae recording artists, his name, face and songs stand as a symbol of inspiration to people around the world. PETER TOSH, BOB MARLEY, and BUNNY LIVINGSTONE were the co-founders of the greatest reggae group of all time “THE WAILERS.”

As always, we are looking forward to your support on SATURDAY, the 11th Day Of October to celebrate the life and legacy a of true reggae legend. Non- perishable food donation will go towards the El Mocambo’s in House Charity Serving Charity.

The House of David Gang
www.myspace.com/houseofdavidgang

The House of David Gang is a Toronto-based reggae outfit that delivers late 70s and early 80s style Jamaican reggae originals mixed with folk, soul, calypso, afrobeat, hip hop as well as classic reggae material of Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer.

Formed in Toronto over 15 years ago, the band is fronted by seasoned reggae veteran King Selah – a fixture of the Canadian Jamaican Reggae scene – and members have included members of Resinators, Irie Band, Explorer Band, Revelation, Selassie I Power, High Plains Drifter, Imagine Rainbow Warriors and many others.

At the young age 17, Desmond Anderson moved to Canada from his home in Portland, Jamaica. He was immediately taken in by the gospel community and sang for many years in church and festival choirs. Upon staring his own group which he called “Selah”, Desmond Anderson become the voice of a resurgence of a roots rock style in Toronto playing frequently at the Bambu, Lee’s Palace, and El Mocambo.

In 1988, two local bands, (Selah and Imagine Rainbow Warriors) merged together. Desmond became King Selah, the powerful lead vocalist with a heart of gold and the band was now called: “House of David Gang” – named after a Queen Street West house those very members shared and used to the host after-hour reggae parties 1988 -1995. Over several years many musicians have been a part of The House of David and the group played a key role in developing some of Toronto’s top session and reggae players.

For the past 15 years King Selah and the House of David Gang have hosted the Toronto Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer Tributes which have helped bring spotlight Toronto’s burgeoning roots rock reggae scene. Now with a new line-up the House of David Gang faithfully recreates the soulful and classic roots rock reggae sound (Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer, Peter Tosh). The band is a certifiable reggae orchestra; the band comprises multiple vocalists, horn players, guitars, keyboards and the rock-steady rhythm section of Collin “Jah-Lin” M. Edwards – (drums) and Uncledropsi (bass).

Rasta Reuben & Selassie I Power
www.reggaeplanet.ca

As a child in Jamaica, Rasta Reuben wrote poetry and listened to music from his father’s record collection. After moving to Canada, he joined the Toronto scene as a skilled bass player and vocalist with Selah Band, Imagine Rainbow Warriors, Ultra Flex, Ras Ivan, and Revelation with whom he performed in the 1990 Caribana Parade. In 1992 he formed Selassie I Power Band, the prescient roots rock reggae powerhouse that was to include two of his brothers Fredlocks on Keyboards and Uncledropsi on bass. Reuben took centre stage with the new band, singing his words in the compelling voice of a reggae prophet to the vocal accompaniment of Sister Julie, a woman whose voice is as beautiful as her heart. In 1997, the band put out King of Kings CD and captured a Canadian Urban Music Award for Best Reggae Album in 1998. That same year they began to tour, ultimately crossing the country and opening for Burning Spear, Beenie Man and other respected reggae artists. Selassie I Power went back into the studio in 2003 to record a new album of Reuben’s songs, Reggae Planet, to be followed by a world tour. Dedicated to the concept of Edu-tainment, Rasta Reuben’s lyrics express modern fears and strivings conquered by the timeless powers of love, freedom and redemption. Those who have seen Reuben in concert are overwhelmed by the total experience of pure inspiration carried on a reggae soundwave that grooves the body, moves the heart, and improves the mind.

He completed his instrumental Dub Life in 2004, and followed up with a compilation album titled Ultra Flex Volume One that showcases his production skills. He is now at work on a dancehall and dub release, Race: The Final Frontier.

Hot off a Summer Tour, that included shows played at from Camp Bisco, Evolve Festival and Cherry Beach, The Chameleon Project have been wining over audiences across Canada and the United States with their arsenal that includes jazz improvisation, electronica and dub reggae.

“Part of the reason we go by the name Chameleon Project is because we can morph into different sounds, we play different gigs and live in a lot of different worlds like drum & bass, jazz and disco so sometimes you hear all that in one song,” says guitarist Josh Laing, whose department also includes FX and real-time sampling. Bassist Snappy Homefry and drummer Tyrone Caissie round out the group, providing a thumping bottom end.

THE HERBALISER (Ninja Tune, UK – K7!)
with GRAND ANALOG . MORE OR LES . DJ ROLLIN’ CASH

The Herbaliser story began in the early 90s when ace West London DJ/producers Jake Wherry and Ollie Teeba discovered a shared love of hip-hop, rare groove, funk and jazz. Albums such as Session One (2000), Something Wicked This Way Comes (2002) and Take London (2005) established Herbaliser Band as a gold standard for DJ/live band collaborations. Vocalists on these albums included Jean Grae, Blade, Roots Manuva, Phi Life Cypher, and Canada’s own More or Les. 2008’s Same As It Never Was is being hailed as the most visionary fusion yet of the Herbaliser duo’s legendary production with the Easy Access Orchestra musicianship. It also showcases stunning young U.K. vocalist Jessica Darling and Canada’s own More or Les, the multi-talented DJ, MC, and Toronto hip hop scene-maker (In Divine Style, Never Forgive Action, Hip Hop Karaoke) who will MC the night and perform with the Herbaliser Band.

Only a year old, Grand Analog has already rocked festivals such as South by Southwest, Western Canadian Music Festival, JunoFest and The Toronto Jazz Festival. Fronted by magnetically charismatic MC Odario Williams, the band’s sound is a beautiful mess of rap’n'roll dub and soul; a hip hop slop shop of times good and bad. Rollin’ Cash’s (Hotpie Records) dubfunk sounds have been a staple of Toronto’s conscious party scene for over 10 years; he currently has a residency at the Drake Hotel, Riddim Sundays.

SOUL JAZZ ORCHESTRA
(MANIFESTO album release party)

With its majestic horns, dusty vintage keyboards, hypnotic Rhodes-driven basslines and fierce earthquaking percussion, Ottawa’s Souljazz Orchestra is redefining Canadian groove with its own potent blend of Funk, Soul, Jazz, Afrobeat, African and Latin music. Behind the decks is John Kong (Do Right! Music), one of Toronto’s most respected party-rocking DJ/producers. Authorities in sound such as Gilles Peterson and Jazzanova support his releases of Ivana Santilli, The Souljazz Orchestra, Elizabeth Shepherd, Abdominal and others.

with DJ GOLDFINGER
www.myspace.com/whatishipradio
* Presented in association with CIUT 89.5 FM & NuFunk.ca *

Saturday, November 29
6 to 10 pm

@ Rasputin Vodka Bar

780 Queen St. E., Toronto
www.rasputinvodkabar.com / 416-469-3737

TORONTO — Since its inception in 1999, DJ Goldfinger has been hipping listeners from Barrie to Buffalo most every Saturday night to an ultra-cool blend of standards, acid jazz, and other jazzified sounds from the underground. In fact, his show “What is Hip!” been around long enough to earn the distinction as the only jazz-centric program currently airing on CIUT. To honour the show’s 9th anniversary, Goldfinger is extending an invitation to a special free live-to-air broadcast party on Saturday, November 29; at the appropriately stylish and refined Rasputin Vodka Bar, 780 Queen St. E. on the north side just east of Broadview Ave.

“It’s a pleasure to invite everyone out to celebrate the true spirit of community radio at this party,” says Goldfinger, aka Craig Pady, also renowned as a producer at Toronto studio The Hive and much in demand as a DJ across North America. “We’ll have Martini specials, coffee from Mercury Espresso, music giveaways and lots more to show our appreciation for the community whose support has made it possible to share What Is Hip on the airwaves for almost a decade. It’s an early party, so we’re easing people into their Saturday grooves just like we do on the show. I’d also like to thank CIUT for making it an even more special occasion with the live-to-air broadcast, and Jay Cleary’s NuFunk.ca for their support getting the word out.”

What Is Hip! airs every Saturday night from 6-8 pm on CIUT 89.5 FM, online at www.ciut.fm.

From BlogTO: http://www.blogto.com/music/2008/11/spookey_ruben_goes_mechanical_on_new_album/

by Gary Peter

Toronto indie pop legend Spookey Ruben is back! After relocating to LA for years to work on various music projects, Spookey has returned to Toronto with a new record called Mechanical Royalty ( Hi-Hat Recordings ). It’s a concept album about a kingdom of robots who are attacked by the humans who originally created them because they possess a magnetic force that keeps harmony in society that the humans want back for themselves. In case it’s not yet obvious – it’s a prog rock record. Spookey releases Mechanical Royalty this Thursday at the Horseshoe.

The album’s title track is a 15-minute prog rock epic, and it’s the kind of unexpected music that Spookey Ruben fans have come to expect. He has always pushed the pop-rock envelope since Modes of Transportation Vol. 1 came out back in 1995. “These Days Are Old” is on his Myspace page and it instantly takes me back to my indie rock roots. I loved that song and it’s whacky video (see below).

Spookey’s current live band includes talented members of our local indie music community including Adam Balsam (These Electric Lives) and Robbie Grunwald (Everything All The Time).

With loads of talented openers, this is one hot Thursday night ticket.

The Jimmy Swift Band
http://www.myspace.com/tjsb
The Jimmy Swift Band’s sound is a fusion of the best in both rock and electronic music. The result is the creation of something different than anything else, a style uniquely JSB. Their live show is a frenzy of sweat, blood, dancing, and thrashing – all to hypnotic rhythms and an unrelenting energy that is both addictive and unstoppable.

The JSB are currently touring in support their new Live Concert DVD filmed at The Marquee Club in Halifax. Performed in front of JSB’s hometown crowd and captured in Hi-Definition, this DVD brings the excitement and energy that has become known, loved and expected of the JSB across Canada. The DVD was filmed and produced by Hemmings House Pictures and a pre-release preview will be available for streaming on aliant.net/entertainment on January 5. The JSB will follow up this Live DVD with their fourth studio release in spring 2009. For both projects the band has embraced even further the electronic elements that have always been a big part of their live show’s popularity while holding strong to their love of dirty rock and roll – its Daft Punk on Jaggermeister – Iron Maiden on Ecstasy…

The Jimmy Swift Band is truly an anomaly within the Canadian music industry – they are unsigned yet have made a living playing music, a success story made possible by the actions of their fans and one clearly judged on the strength of their music alone. On stage JSB’s energy has always been focused on the audience – on turning a Saturday night concert into an unforgettable experience. You will likely never see or hear anything like The Jimmy Swift Band anywhere else, and you will never walk away from another show feeling like you did the last time you saw the JSB.

SOS (Scientists of Sound)
Live Band/DJ JSB Side Project
http://www.myspace.com/loopingmadnessduo
Scientists of Sound is the “looping madness duo” comprised of keyboardist Aaron Collier and guitarist Craig Mercer of the The Jimmy Swift Band. Their high energy live show is a four-on-the-floor-ho-down with Collier manning a spaceship’s worth of knobs, keys and buttons to produce beats, bass lines and synth hooks while Mercer plots their course for utter chaos with looping guitar riffs, dense layered textures and melodies. The two work in tandem to perform live vocoder vocals with Mercer on the microphone and Collier keying out the melody on his synth. The costumed duo is a live dance party where the dude with the laptop hiding what he’s actually doing is replaced with real musicians playing what you hear and bearing all.

Bob Marley
http://www.bobmarley.com

On February 7, 2008, International music star Bob Marley would have been 64 years old if he had not succumbed to cancer on Monday May 11, 1981 at the young age 36-years-old.

Today almost anywhere in the world when the name Bob Marley is mentioned it is recognized by old and young. He remains enormously popular and well known all over the world. Reggae’s most transcendent and iconic figure, Bob Marley was the first Jamaican artist to achieve international superstardom, in the process introducing the music of his native island nation to the far-flung corners of the globe. Marley’s music gave voice to the day-to-day struggles of the Jamaican experience, vividly capturing not only the plight of the country’s impoverished and oppressed but also the devout spirituality that remains their source of strength.

His songs of faith, devotion, and revolution created a legacy that continues to live on not only through the music of his extended family but also through generations of artists the world over touched by his genius.

With a special cast of Toronto Musicians, Djs and MCs, a celebration of Bob Marley’s legacy of music, peace and love will take at LEE’s PALACE on Saturday February 9th, 2008

FEATURED ARTISTS:

House of David Gang
http://www.myspace.com/houseofdavidgang

Featuring King Selah

THE HOUSE OF DAVID GANG is a Toronto-based reggae outfit that delivers late 70s and early 80s style Jamaican reggae classics . Formed in Toronto over 15 years ago, the band is fronted by seasoned reggae veteran King Selah and whose members have included members of Resinators, Irie Band, Explorer Band, Revelation, Sellasie I Power and many others. The House of David Gang got it’s name from a House that a group of like minded Toronto Reggae Musicians lived in and who held after-hour reggae parties for several years which developed the musicians into some of Toronto’s Top session players. For the past 15 years King Selah and the House of David Gang have hosted the Toronto Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer Tributes which have helped bring light to Toronto’s burgeoning roots rock reggae scene. Now with a new line-up – The House of David Gang faithfully recreates the Bob Marley Sound – which includes 2 guitarists, 2 keyboardists and a strong rhythm section of Jah-Lin (drums) and Uncledropsi (bass).

Michael Garrick

Frequently @ The Original Motorcycle Company, Micheal is a veteran of Toronto’s reggae scene and has entertained local and international audiences for many years. Listen to Czech Breakbeat Mountain Mix: http://www.zshare.net/audio/114637629637a4e e/

For the second installment of our Legends of Funk series, we bring you a rare back to back set format with 3 legends of funk rocking four decks all night long!

DJ CZECH
www.djczech.com
www.myspace.com/djczech

It’s a standard formula for world domination and DJ Czech is sticking to it well.
First, control you own neighborhood, Czech’s initial step into the Canadian underground scene was introducing “Soul Kitchen” to Whistler, British Columbia, Canada’s top ski and snowboard destination. That was 1989, Whistler has grown to one of the top sports destinations in the world and Soul Kitchen is still cooking up beats, making it the longest-running club night in Western Canada.

Next, Czech infiltrated the thriving new music scene in Vancouver, BC, and his unique flavour of breaks, turntablism, and comic personality earned him legendary residencies at all of the city’s hottest nightclubs and helped establish VanCity’s reputation for up front electronic music. Meanwhile Czech had ensured himself household name status on the West Coast, particularly amongst breaks lovers.

Third step- the world. Somehow balancing his residencies with a ridiculous touring schedule Czech has been turning out prestigious clubs and massive raves every single weekend for the last 15 years. He’s carted his records throughout Europe, North America and Asia and headlined alongside premier acts such as The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, Parliment,Orbital, Crystal Method, De La Soul ,Rabbit in the Moon, Porno for Pyros, and countless world renowned Dj’s.

And to round it off, Czech has been writing and producing his own tracks since WHEN?__, continuously building his studio and releasing music on “Futuristic Funk Records,” which he co-owns and uses to proudly showcase other Canadian talent as well as his own material.
These days Czech primarily spins Break Beats with touch of Electro but he has been known to drop all old-school 45 funk sets out of the blue and pepper them with some down-home mid tempo breaks, just to make sure you’re paying attention.

What I like most about Czech is not his unrivalled history on the scene, his numerous key accomplishments, or his worldwide appeal. I like him because sometimes when you go visit him in the club, he’ll toss on a looped record of the Joker laughing, just laughter no music, and light a cigarette and talk to you about whatever pops into his head until the dance floor starts throwing ice, glasses, and insults at him, demanding more beats. After a minute or two, usually when the audience is at a near-frenzy levels and the cigarette is getting down, Czech will thank you for dropping in, order you a drink, and get back to work.

BIG LEAGUE CHU
www.bigleaguechu.com
www.myspace.com/bigleaguechu

Colin Chu, better known as Big League Chu, is simply the leading DJ talent in Canada’s breakbeat scene today. After over a decade of DJing, his name is synonymous with the funky, party-happy sound that’s become Chu’s rallying call – and it’s one that crowds answer faithfully. Whether it’s at his residencies at Toronto’s legendary Breakfest events, The Make It Funky Jams, or the large one-off shows that Toronto boasts. In a city renowned as one of North America’s largest party scenes, Chu has played alongside the worlds finest, allowing him to develop his own distinct style of breaks. Chu’s sets can vary from hard beats to melodic funky down tempo sounds, but always remains a crowd mover. The born and raised Torontonian began spinning in London, Ontario while taking his undergraduate degree in psychology and sociology at The University of Western Ontario. Chu quickly garnered attention at local parties, leading to gigs in Toronto, including the Dose event in the summer of 1999 when he was asked to fill in for Barry Weaver for his second appearance in the city. He so impressed organizers that Chu was then asked to play the 14,000 plus crowd at the annual Dose Freakin Halloween event later that year, and as since become a mainstay for Toronto’s largest party companies, like Metro Productions (Kickit and Out of Hand), Lifeforce Industries (Dose, Syrous and Renegades), Empire, and Liquid Adrenaline. As of late Big League Chu has found himself working on tracks again in the studio so keep your ears to the ground on upcoming new beats

ROBB G (Promo Records, Toronto)
www.robbg.com
www.myspace.com/robbg123

When the Plump DJs were asked in a recent interview who the most exciting producers are at the moment, they stated Robb G alongside Justice and Switch. He’s had releases and remixes on In Stereo, Streetwise, Eastern Bloc, 2 Wars, Botchit as well as his own Laidback Lab and Promo Records imprints. His “12 Inch Therapy” single was declared “THE tune of Miami” as it was played (sometimes twice) at every major event at last year’s Winter Music Conference. The release received glowing reviews in URB, DJ, iDJ and Mixmag, hit #12 on the DMC Buzz Charts as well as became the number 1 most requested song on Sirius Radio’s Boombox Channel. Robb and his label are hot off two nominations at the 2008 years Breakspoll awards and he now holds a residency on Sirius Satellite Radio.

Behind the decks, Robb G is known for speedy beatmatching and continuous
layered mixing charged with a head-banging body thrash. Seeing him live, there is no questioning that this is a man who truly loves what he does. He landed his first residency at the young age of 15 and in the decade and a
half since, his hard work ethic and electric performances have taken him to Europe, across the US and more than 30 Canadian cities.

His music mixes rock, folk and indigenous instruments while his lyrics contain socially conscious themes, such as environmentalism, the rights of Aboriginal peoples and world peace. In addition to playing the didgeridoo in many of his songs, Xavier simultaneously plays percussion, guitar and sings. Xavier Rudd has performed with Dave Matthews Band, Michael Franti and Ani DiFranco and Jack Johnson.

With a talent line-up of over 40 acts, Evolve strives to present a uniquely eclectic line-up, including new favourites and old, running the musical spectrum –from rock to jazz to funk, from world music, to hip hop, to electronica, and back again. From live electronic artists; The New Deal, Shout Out Out Out Out and That One Guy; to East Coast mainstays; Slowcoaster, Caledonia, Share and The Sleepless Nights; to globetrotting Djs; A.Skillz, Elite Force, Myagi and Mat the Alien; to hot emerging Canadian talent; Mishka, Valery Gore and The Ukaladies, plus international comedic sensation Jon Lajoie, Evolve continues to push artistic boundaries and audience expectations. See www.evolvefestival.com for the full line up.

Evolve Festival
is a grassroots festival that has grown to become a showcase for music, a forum for environmental awareness, and a celebration of the beauty that is uniquely Maritime. It is entirely dedicated to sustainable environmental stewardship – the largest festival of its kind in Canada. Besides offering an amazing music experience, Evolve is committed to being one of Canada’s greenest events. Evolve strives to set a standard for sustainable festivals — by utilizing renewable energy sources, using recycled paper and vegetable-based inks for all printed materials, biodegradable plates and utensils for food vending, reducing waste and most significantly by providing a forum to network and learn more about social and environmental issues. In addition, the E10 Green Team, a volunteer greening initiatives collective, is facilitating efficient waste disposal and recycling systems at the Evolve festival this year to reduce the environmental impact of the festival. Come get involved!

The three-day Evolve Festival has general camping as well as a quiet/family camping area. There will be full-service facilities including running water, portable washrooms, clean drinking water, and wash stations. There is also a kids’ play zone with organized activities and music for the youngsters and, as usual, a vendor’s area will offer a diverse range of scrumptious food to keep people energized. The vendors’ area will also feature many talented artisans selling crafts, garment, jewelry and one-of-a-kind items.
