From their 1998 self-titled debut, right up to their latest By the Door in 2005, the group’s songwriting skills have evolved from a full-blown funk collective to a focused folk-rock quartet.

Celebrating the band’s 12 year anniversary, The Burt Neilson Band have only performed a hand full of shows between 2006 and 2008 due to the busy schedules of the individual musicians. Burt Neilson Band is Mike Filipowitsch (guitar/vocals) currently performing solo in Northern Ontario, Jeff Heisholt (keyboards/vocals) currently performing with The TREWS, Jeremy Little (bass/vocals) currently performing with Jason Collett and Gavin Maguire (drums/vocals) currently with Pete Elkas.

by Gary Peter

Toronto indie pop legend Spookey Ruben is back! After relocating to LA for years to work on various music projects, Spookey has returned to Toronto with a new record called Mechanical Royalty ( Hi-Hat Recordings ). It’s a concept album about a kingdom of robots who are attacked by the humans who originally created them because they possess a magnetic force that keeps harmony in society that the humans want back for themselves. In case it’s not yet obvious – it’s a prog rock record. Spookey releases Mechanical Royalty this Thursday at the Horseshoe.

The album’s title track is a 15-minute prog rock epic, and it’s the kind of unexpected music that Spookey Ruben fans have come to expect. He has always pushed the pop-rock envelope since Modes of Transportation Vol. 1 came out back in 1995. “These Days Are Old” is on his Myspace page and it instantly takes me back to my indie rock roots. I loved that song and it’s whacky video (see below).

Spookey’s current live band includes talented members of our local indie music community including Adam Balsam (These Electric Lives) and Robbie Grunwald (Everything All The Time).

With loads of talented openers, this is one hot Thursday night ticket.

www.rasputinvodkabar.com / 416-469-3737

TORONTO — Since its inception in 1999, DJ Goldfinger has been hipping listeners from Barrie to Buffalo most every Saturday night to an ultra-cool blend of standards, acid jazz, and other jazzified sounds from the underground. In fact, his show “What is Hip!” been around long enough to earn the distinction as the only jazz-centric program currently airing on CIUT. To honour the show’s 9th anniversary, Goldfinger is extending an invitation to a special free live-to-air broadcast party on Saturday, November 29; at the appropriately stylish and refined Rasputin Vodka Bar, 780 Queen St. E. on the north side just east of Broadview Ave.

“It’s a pleasure to invite everyone out to celebrate the true spirit of community radio at this party,” says Goldfinger, aka Craig Pady, also renowned as a producer at Toronto studio The Hive and much in demand as a DJ across North America. “We’ll have Martini specials, coffee from Mercury Espresso, music giveaways and lots more to show our appreciation for the community whose support has made it possible to share What Is Hip on the airwaves for almost a decade. It’s an early party, so we’re easing people into their Saturday grooves just like we do on the show. I’d also like to thank CIUT for making it an even more special occasion with the live-to-air broadcast, and Jay Cleary’s NuFunk.ca for their support getting the word out.”

What Is Hip! airs every Saturday night from 6-8 pm on CIUT 89.5 FM, online at www.ciut.fm.

THE HERBALISER (Ninja Tune, UK – K7!)
with GRAND ANALOG . MORE OR LES . DJ ROLLIN’ CASH

The Herbaliser story began in the early 90s when ace West London DJ/producers Jake Wherry and Ollie Teeba discovered a shared love of hip-hop, rare groove, funk and jazz. Albums such as Session One (2000), Something Wicked This Way Comes (2002) and Take London (2005) established Herbaliser Band as a gold standard for DJ/live band collaborations. Vocalists on these albums included Jean Grae, Blade, Roots Manuva, Phi Life Cypher, and Canada’s own More or Les. 2008’s Same As It Never Was is being hailed as the most visionary fusion yet of the Herbaliser duo’s legendary production with the Easy Access Orchestra musicianship. It also showcases stunning young U.K. vocalist Jessica Darling and Canada’s own More or Les, the multi-talented DJ, MC, and Toronto hip hop scene-maker (In Divine Style, Never Forgive Action, Hip Hop Karaoke) who will MC the night and perform with the Herbaliser Band.

Only a year old, Grand Analog has already rocked festivals such as South by Southwest, Western Canadian Music Festival, JunoFest and The Toronto Jazz Festival. Fronted by magnetically charismatic MC Odario Williams, the band’s sound is a beautiful mess of rap’n'roll dub and soul; a hip hop slop shop of times good and bad. Rollin’ Cash’s (Hotpie Records) dubfunk sounds have been a staple of Toronto’s conscious party scene for over 10 years; he currently has a residency at the Drake Hotel, Riddim Sundays.

Planet Earth is a vanguard of funk revival, having rocked Toronto clubs since 1999. Led by Juno-winning keyboardist Dylan Heming, the core of the band includes singer Ron Littlejohn, drummer Ben Riley, and bassman Glenn Olive; with a rotating who’s who of backing players such as Jake Langley, Guido Basso, Steve Donald, Perry White, and Mark Kelso; and the occasional “Planetary” luminary like Alex Lifeson and Holly Cole. They have recently opened for superstars Maceo Parker, K-OS, Maestro, and Joey DeFrancesco. Nujazz Festival and Do Right! Music present…
SOUL JAZZ ORCHESTRA
(MANIFESTO album release party)
with DJ JOHN KONG

With its majestic horns, dusty vintage keyboards, hypnotic Rhodes-driven basslines and fierce earthquaking percussion, Ottawa’s Souljazz Orchestra is redefining Canadian groove with its own potent blend of Funk, Soul, Jazz, Afrobeat, African and Latin music. Manifesto is the Souljazz Orchestra’s newly-released album, following up on 2006’s hugely-acclaimed Freedom No Go Die. Bringing together inspirations from Fela Kuti to James Brown, from Mulatu Astatke to Pharoah Sanders, the SJO has shared the stage with the likes of Femi Kuti, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings and Etta James; and have begun to find tremendous popularity in Europe.

Behind the decks is John Kong (Do Right! Music), one of Toronto’s most respected party-rocking DJ/producers. Authorities in sound such as Gilles Peterson and Jazzanova support his releases of Ivana Santilli, The Souljazz Orchestra, Elizabeth Shepherd, Abdominal and others.
