The 3 Day NuJazz Festivall ends with a not-to-be-missed event headlined by Jazzanova, considered one of the most important jazz/electronic projects of our time. They are joined by Toronto’s John Kong, DJ gaDJet & Chico Pacheco, Rollin’ Cash and a special live performance by former Bulfrog band leader Robertson.

When it comes to Jazzanova, there is always a lot to account for. “All the time, we have to explain to people what the sense in all of this is”, says Alexander Barck, one of the DJs/Producers of Jazzanova, with an ironic grin on his face. “Sometimes it’s funny to us, because we never think of it that way. We love music, we listen to a lot of music – old, new – and we like to make music. And that’s just it: A playful interaction with it.”

This may sound plausible, but it actually is a huge understatement, because they belong among a small, worldwide group of innovators, when it comes to Dancefloor, NuJazz, Broken Beat, to modern Folk und Soul. Around the globe, DJs and vinyl freaks adore Jazzanova. Their remixes for Masters At Work, Fat Freddys Drop, 4Hero or Ursula Rucker are gems. But the six guys from Berlin have also enjoyed the feat of treating the most different of source material with respect and to simultaneously give it an unmistakable Jazzanova sound signature for such diverse artists as Lenny Kravitz, Common, Azymuth or Calexico. The ability to bring together different styles and their enormous effort and input into research and the ability to put to work all possibilities, is not only widely respected throughout the international music community, but also constantly drives themselves to be a step ahead.

There is a lot to hear, sense, and feel while listening to this music. The music has a lot of soul, and is lively and deep at the same time. Jazzanova use their albums to express their musical vision through songs.

Jazzanova are, undoubtedly, one of the most important dance/electronic projects of the last ten years. They set the template for most dance/electronica and one of the first projects to bring some world music awareness to dance music, bringing in elements of Latin and African music and, in the process, showing that dance music itself is something that almost exists since the dawn of times.

And, of course, lets not forget that Jazzanova, along with Kruder & Dorfmeister, also brought the art of remixing to a new and refreshing stage. In many cases, their remixes are so much that as almost new creations in themselves, sometimes completely turning the original tunes upside down. In some cases, that approach can even turn what was originally dull and turn it into a dancefloor stomper or a great chill-out vibe.

Robertson, the singer-songwriter and main instigator behind the internationally acclaimed Montreal pop band Bullfrog, is ready to hit it live with his new Lp ” Favorite People “. After years of working the Montreal and Canadian club circuit, touring the world as Bullfrog’s front man and kid koala’s guitar player, headlining clubs and festivals all over north America and Europe, Robertson has been turning heads as a solo artist. Since his well received 2004 release ” Deeper Shade of Green” Robertson could be seen playing shows in Canada and Europe, appearing on bass for Money Mark, opening for Kid Koala, Michael Franti and SpearHead, Soulive,Wailers, Maceo Parker…and more.

On Saturday, September 26th, Footprints & Nufunk.ca join forces to present one of the world’s most unique and high energy bands; HYPNOTIC BRASS ENSEMBLE. This date will also mark the 7-YEAR ANNIVERSARY of the Footprints collective and their highly successful monthly event!  Without a doubt this will be a show you will NOT want to miss!

HYPNOTIC BRASS ENSEMBLE
http://www.myspace.com/hypnoticbusiness

The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is an instrumental group comprised of 8 horn players and a drummer, all but one of whom are sons of jazz musician Kelan Phil Cohran (who played trumpet in Sun Ra Arkestra).Originally from Chicago, IL, they are currently based in New York City. As the headliners of the NuJazz Festival http://www.nujazz.ca last year, the buzz around this band locally and internationally continues to expand, combined with the release of their new CD on Honest Jons Records which features Flea, Damon Albarn (of Blurr) and legendary drummer Tony Allen.

The music that Hypnotic Brass Ensemble plays might best be described as highly composed instrumental hip-hop: accomplished, energetic songs designed for dancing.

FOOTPRINTS is a 4 person DJ and design collective comprised of Jason Palma, General Eclectic, DJ Stuart and promotivator / dancer Lybido. They’re considered by many to be Toronto’s premiere underground open format dance event, attracting a supremely loyal following since their inception 7 years ago.

With a shared belief that you can’t know your future until you know your past, each member of Footprints takes an all inclusive approach to DJing, connecting the dots between a wide variety of music ranging from; Funk, Soul, Afrobeat, Latin and Brasilian to Dub, Reggae, Brokenbeat, Electro, House and Hip Hop.

The result is an unpretentious marriage of musical flavors that has become uniquely their own, attracting an ever increasing amount of adventurous and open-minded music lovers looking for a party without all the usual ‘club hype’.

FOOT PRINTS is…

JASON PALMA

A well known figure in the Toronto scene, Palma brings over 15 years experience deejaying a wide variety of music; from latin, soul, classic house, funk, hip hop to Brazilian samba & afrobeat. As one of the first architects of Toronto’s early Acid Jazz, Deep House and Funk scenes, his skill at mixing records that would appear to be ‘unmixable’ has placed him in constant demand over the course of his career, while also making him one of the most beloved DJs in the T-dot!

GENERAL ECLECTIC

A man with no limit of passion and knowledge when it comes to nearly all types of music. General Eclectic displays his skills on the decks with heart and intensity each and every Foot Prints party. His meticulous attention to detail when mixing records and his instinctive ability to effortlessly flow between genres has won him a large following of music heads and dance floor junkies. Having been known to play just about anything in his sets, his style is hard to categorize but impossible to refuse.

DJ STU (aka BASICSOULUNIT)
Stuart is a man of many different guises, having his hand in a number of Toronto’s exciting underground scenes. Many know him as his famous alter ego “Basic Soul Unit”, under which he crafts deftly unique Techno inspired soulful music – winning him critical acclaim both here at home and abroad. Stu brings his knowledge of Techno, Classic House, Garage and Disco to the Foot Prints people each month, proving an invaluable asset for keeping that steady pace and firing up the dance floor like no other deejay in Toronto.

Dear Friends

Did you ever hear the story about the Nufunk Van? In 2005-2007 – Nufunk had the use of a 1984 White VW Westfalia that acted as the company’s transportation to events, help move musical equipment and, helped bands tour around Ontario and Atlantic Canada and visited several festivals across Canada.

nufunk-fire.jpg picture by jaydawg420

Well! While on tour to Nova Scotia to The Evolve Festival http://www.evolvefestival.com in 2007 – the van mysteriously caught fire. My High Plains Drifter Band members and I had to literally escape for the lives! See more photos below! It was a massive disaster, as the band members lost all their clothes and musical gear and I personally lost my instruments, camera, cell phone, clothes and my beloved ride. We lost an estimated $25,000 worth of stuff collectively and it has been a struggle for us ever since. Luckily we have found support along the way and things are getting better all the time.

Listen to Czech Breakbeat Mountain Mix: http://www.zshare.net/audio/114637629637a4e e/

For the second installment of our Legends of Funk series, we bring you a rare back to back set format with 3 legends of funk rocking four decks all night long!

DJ CZECH
www.djczech.com
www.myspace.com/djczech

It’s a standard formula for world domination and DJ Czech is sticking to it well.
First, control you own neighborhood, Czech’s initial step into the Canadian underground scene was introducing “Soul Kitchen” to Whistler, British Columbia, Canada’s top ski and snowboard destination. That was 1989, Whistler has grown to one of the top sports destinations in the world and Soul Kitchen is still cooking up beats, making it the longest-running club night in Western Canada.

Next, Czech infiltrated the thriving new music scene in Vancouver, BC, and his unique flavour of breaks, turntablism, and comic personality earned him legendary residencies at all of the city’s hottest nightclubs and helped establish VanCity’s reputation for up front electronic music. Meanwhile Czech had ensured himself household name status on the West Coast, particularly amongst breaks lovers.

Third step- the world. Somehow balancing his residencies with a ridiculous touring schedule Czech has been turning out prestigious clubs and massive raves every single weekend for the last 15 years. He’s carted his records throughout Europe, North America and Asia and headlined alongside premier acts such as The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, Parliment,Orbital, Crystal Method, De La Soul ,Rabbit in the Moon, Porno for Pyros, and countless world renowned Dj’s.

And to round it off, Czech has been writing and producing his own tracks since WHEN?__, continuously building his studio and releasing music on “Futuristic Funk Records,” which he co-owns and uses to proudly showcase other Canadian talent as well as his own material.
These days Czech primarily spins Break Beats with touch of Electro but he has been known to drop all old-school 45 funk sets out of the blue and pepper them with some down-home mid tempo breaks, just to make sure you’re paying attention.

What I like most about Czech is not his unrivalled history on the scene, his numerous key accomplishments, or his worldwide appeal. I like him because sometimes when you go visit him in the club, he’ll toss on a looped record of the Joker laughing, just laughter no music, and light a cigarette and talk to you about whatever pops into his head until the dance floor starts throwing ice, glasses, and insults at him, demanding more beats. After a minute or two, usually when the audience is at a near-frenzy levels and the cigarette is getting down, Czech will thank you for dropping in, order you a drink, and get back to work.

BIG LEAGUE CHU
www.bigleaguechu.com
www.myspace.com/bigleaguechu

Colin Chu, better known as Big League Chu, is simply the leading DJ talent in Canada’s breakbeat scene today. After over a decade of DJing, his name is synonymous with the funky, party-happy sound that’s become Chu’s rallying call – and it’s one that crowds answer faithfully. Whether it’s at his residencies at Toronto’s legendary Breakfest events, The Make It Funky Jams, or the large one-off shows that Toronto boasts. In a city renowned as one of North America’s largest party scenes, Chu has played alongside the worlds finest, allowing him to develop his own distinct style of breaks. Chu’s sets can vary from hard beats to melodic funky down tempo sounds, but always remains a crowd mover. The born and raised Torontonian began spinning in London, Ontario while taking his undergraduate degree in psychology and sociology at The University of Western Ontario. Chu quickly garnered attention at local parties, leading to gigs in Toronto, including the Dose event in the summer of 1999 when he was asked to fill in for Barry Weaver for his second appearance in the city. He so impressed organizers that Chu was then asked to play the 14,000 plus crowd at the annual Dose Freakin Halloween event later that year, and as since become a mainstay for Toronto’s largest party companies, like Metro Productions (Kickit and Out of Hand), Lifeforce Industries (Dose, Syrous and Renegades), Empire, and Liquid Adrenaline. As of late Big League Chu has found himself working on tracks again in the studio so keep your ears to the ground on upcoming new beats

ROBB G (Promo Records, Toronto)
www.robbg.com
www.myspace.com/robbg123

When the Plump DJs were asked in a recent interview who the most exciting producers are at the moment, they stated Robb G alongside Justice and Switch. He’s had releases and remixes on In Stereo, Streetwise, Eastern Bloc, 2 Wars, Botchit as well as his own Laidback Lab and Promo Records imprints. His “12 Inch Therapy” single was declared “THE tune of Miami” as it was played (sometimes twice) at every major event at last year’s Winter Music Conference. The release received glowing reviews in URB, DJ, iDJ and Mixmag, hit #12 on the DMC Buzz Charts as well as became the number 1 most requested song on Sirius Radio’s Boombox Channel. Robb and his label are hot off two nominations at the 2008 years Breakspoll awards and he now holds a residency on Sirius Satellite Radio.

Behind the decks, Robb G is known for speedy beatmatching and continuous
layered mixing charged with a head-banging body thrash. Seeing him live, there is no questioning that this is a man who truly loves what he does. He landed his first residency at the young age of 15 and in the decade and a
half since, his hard work ethic and electric performances have taken him to Europe, across the US and more than 30 Canadian cities.

Make it Funky

From BlogTO: http://www.blogto.com/music/2008/11/spookey_ruben_goes_mechanical_on_new_album/

by Gary Peter

Toronto indie pop legend Spookey Ruben is back! After relocating to LA for years to work on various music projects, Spookey has returned to Toronto with a new record called Mechanical Royalty ( Hi-Hat Recordings ). It’s a concept album about a kingdom of robots who are attacked by the humans who originally created them because they possess a magnetic force that keeps harmony in society that the humans want back for themselves. In case it’s not yet obvious – it’s a prog rock record. Spookey releases Mechanical Royalty this Thursday at the Horseshoe.

The album’s title track is a 15-minute prog rock epic, and it’s the kind of unexpected music that Spookey Ruben fans have come to expect. He has always pushed the pop-rock envelope since Modes of Transportation Vol. 1 came out back in 1995. “These Days Are Old” is on his Myspace page and it instantly takes me back to my indie rock roots. I loved that song and it’s whacky video (see below).

Spookey’s current live band includes talented members of our local indie music community including Adam Balsam (These Electric Lives) and Robbie Grunwald (Everything All The Time).

With loads of talented openers, this is one hot Thursday night ticket.

THE HERBALISER (Ninja Tune, UK – K7!)
with GRAND ANALOG . MORE OR LES . DJ ROLLIN’ CASH

The Herbaliser story began in the early 90s when ace West London DJ/producers Jake Wherry and Ollie Teeba discovered a shared love of hip-hop, rare groove, funk and jazz. Albums such as Session One (2000), Something Wicked This Way Comes (2002) and Take London (2005) established Herbaliser Band as a gold standard for DJ/live band collaborations. Vocalists on these albums included Jean Grae, Blade, Roots Manuva, Phi Life Cypher, and Canada’s own More or Les. 2008’s Same As It Never Was is being hailed as the most visionary fusion yet of the Herbaliser duo’s legendary production with the Easy Access Orchestra musicianship. It also showcases stunning young U.K. vocalist Jessica Darling and Canada’s own More or Les, the multi-talented DJ, MC, and Toronto hip hop scene-maker (In Divine Style, Never Forgive Action, Hip Hop Karaoke) who will MC the night and perform with the Herbaliser Band.

Only a year old, Grand Analog has already rocked festivals such as South by Southwest, Western Canadian Music Festival, JunoFest and The Toronto Jazz Festival. Fronted by magnetically charismatic MC Odario Williams, the band’s sound is a beautiful mess of rap’n'roll dub and soul; a hip hop slop shop of times good and bad. Rollin’ Cash’s (Hotpie Records) dubfunk sounds have been a staple of Toronto’s conscious party scene for over 10 years; he currently has a residency at the Drake Hotel, Riddim Sundays.

PLANET EARTH with special guest KEVIN BREIT
with THE NATIONAL PARCS and DJ GOLDFINGER

Planet Earth is a vanguard of funk revival, having rocked Toronto clubs since 1999. Led by Juno-winning keyboardist Dylan Heming, the core of the band includes singer Ron Littlejohn, drummer Ben Riley, and bassman Glenn Olive; with a rotating who’s who of backing players such as Jake Langley, Guido Basso, Steve Donald, Perry White, and Mark Kelso; and the occasional “Planetary” luminary like Alex Lifeson and Holly Cole. They have recently opened for superstars Maceo Parker, K-OS, Maestro, and Joey DeFrancesco. Joining Planet Earth for this party is the supremely gifted guitar genius Kevin Breit, who in addition to leading Sisters Euclid and Folkalarm works regularly with pop superstar Norah Jones, “Mysticsippi” sitarist Harry Manx, blues harmonica innovator Carlos Del Junco and many more.

Veterans of legendary Montreal collective Freeworm, The National Parcs turn the great outdoors into their studio on the new Timbervision CD/DVD. Their songs come alive with all-natural samples of wood splitting, sand slipping, paddles slapping, and water dripping; their live multimedia show is not to be missed! DJ Goldfinger’s jazzy-cool selections rock parties all over Toronto, New York City and beyond. He hosts “What is Hip” every Saturday night on CIUT 89.5 FM and is constantly in demand as a producer at The Hive, one of Toronto’s finest studios.

Nujazz Festival and Do Right! Music present…
SOUL JAZZ ORCHESTRA
(MANIFESTO album release party)
with DJ JOHN KONG

With its majestic horns, dusty vintage keyboards, hypnotic Rhodes-driven basslines and fierce earthquaking percussion, Ottawa’s Souljazz Orchestra is redefining Canadian groove with its own potent blend of Funk, Soul, Jazz, Afrobeat, African and Latin music. Manifesto is the Souljazz Orchestra’s newly-released album, following up on 2006’s hugely-acclaimed Freedom No Go Die. Bringing together inspirations from Fela Kuti to James Brown, from Mulatu Astatke to Pharoah Sanders, the SJO has shared the stage with the likes of Femi Kuti, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings and Etta James; and have begun to find tremendous popularity in Europe.

Behind the decks is John Kong (Do Right! Music), one of Toronto’s most respected party-rocking DJ/producers. Authorities in sound such as Gilles Peterson and Jazzanova support his releases of Ivana Santilli, The Souljazz Orchestra, Elizabeth Shepherd, Abdominal and others.

Footprints is a 4 person artist, promotions & deejay collective who’ve for the past 7 years been bringing a unique poly-rhythmic party rocking mix of afrobeat, funk, soul, jazz and more to the Toronto underground.
