BASSNECTAR is a freeform electronic music and social experimentation project based in San Francisco, California. Primarily a music project of Lorin Ashton, BASSNECTAR is also accompanied by various collaborators. Ashton describes BASSNECTAR’S sound as “omni-tempo maximalism,” by which he means combining beats and basslines with music of any or all speeds, time signatures, rhythms, and sound source. The sound gravitates toward heavy tempos, playing with double time and half time, and using electronic methods to embellish and reinforce other styles of music, including ragtime, punk rock, blues, batucada, polka, salsa, film scores, gangsta rap, beatboxing, balkan gypsy music, ska, death metal, or dub. According to Ashton, “we are so blessed, and so deeply fortunate to be alive and awake right now…it’s a basic truth, but it’s very powerful. I think privilege confers responsibility, and Bassnectar is a reflection of that opportunity to give back; the motion of my cells bouncing back at the world.” BASSNECTAR also has a podcast on iTunes called BASSNECTAR Transmission and regularly releases bootlegs on the official website.

The 3 Day NuJazz Festivall ends with a not-to-be-missed event headlined by Jazzanova, considered one of the most important jazz/electronic projects of our time. They are joined by Toronto’s John Kong, DJ gaDJet & Chico Pacheco, Rollin’ Cash and a special live performance by former Bulfrog band leader Robertson.

Jazzanova (Berlin, Sonar Kollectiv) DJ Set

When it comes to Jazzanova, there is always a lot to account for. “All the time, we have to explain to people what the sense in all of this is”, says Alexander Barck, one of the DJs/Producers of Jazzanova, with an ironic grin on his face. “Sometimes it’s funny to us, because we never think of it that way. We love music, we listen to a lot of music – old, new – and we like to make music. And that’s just it: A playful interaction with it.”

This may sound plausible, but it actually is a huge understatement, because they belong among a small, worldwide group of innovators, when it comes to Dancefloor, NuJazz, Broken Beat, to modern Folk und Soul. Around the globe, DJs and vinyl freaks adore Jazzanova. Their remixes for Masters At Work, Fat Freddys Drop, 4Hero or Ursula Rucker are gems. But the six guys from Berlin have also enjoyed the feat of treating the most different of source material with respect and to simultaneously give it an unmistakable Jazzanova sound signature for such diverse artists as Lenny Kravitz, Common, Azymuth or Calexico. The ability to bring together different styles and their enormous effort and input into research and the ability to put to work all possibilities, is not only widely respected throughout the international music community, but also constantly drives themselves to be a step ahead.

There is a lot to hear, sense, and feel while listening to this music. The music has a lot of soul, and is lively and deep at the same time. Jazzanova use their albums to express their musical vision through songs.

Jazzanova are, undoubtedly, one of the most important dance/electronic projects of the last ten years. They set the template for most dance/electronica and one of the first projects to bring some world music awareness to dance music, bringing in elements of Latin and African music and, in the process, showing that dance music itself is something that almost exists since the dawn of times.

And, of course, lets not forget that Jazzanova, along with Kruder & Dorfmeister, also brought the art of remixing to a new and refreshing stage. In many cases, their remixes are so much that as almost new creations in themselves, sometimes completely turning the original tunes upside down. In some cases, that approach can even turn what was originally dull and turn it into a dancefloor stomper or a great chill-out vibe.

Robertson, the singer-songwriter and main instigator behind the internationally acclaimed Montreal pop band Bullfrog, is ready to hit it live with his new Lp ” Favorite People “. After years of working the Montreal and Canadian club circuit, touring the world as Bullfrog’s front man and kid koala’s guitar player, headlining clubs and festivals all over north America and Europe, Robertson has been turning heads as a solo artist. Since his well received 2004 release ” Deeper Shade of Green” Robertson could be seen playing shows in Canada and Europe, appearing on bass for Money Mark, opening for Kid Koala, Michael Franti and SpearHead, Soulive,Wailers, Maceo Parker…and more.

Multiple Juno Nominee Elizabeth Shepherd is hitting up dates in Quebec and Ontario this November in which she will debut new tunes from her forthcoming album. Known for her jazz groove melodies and improvisational keyboard playing on her two critically exclaimed albums Start to Move and Parkdale, Shepherd shines in the live setting, interacting moment by moment with her musicians and audience. It’s a one of a kind musical conversation that has helped her ignite a strong following across the globe and offered opportunities to perform at LA’s Hollywood Bowl, Tokyo’s Cotton Club, Rotterdam’s North Sea Jazz Festival, London’s Jazz Café, and across Canada.

Bio

Elizabeth Shepherd’s music is less about following a particular tradition than it is about expressing a creative spirit; she is an artist looking to share her take on the world. Which is not surprising coming from someone who grew up in a highly musical family, living all over Canada and France, played tenor horn in the Salvation Army brass band where her parents were ministers, had an early love-affair with hip-hop music, only to wind up studying French poetry, and eventually, classical and jazz piano at McGill University.

Her multiple industry accolades have landed her 2 Juno nominations (Canada’s Grammy equivalent), tours in Europe and across and North America, Japan, and most recently, a show at the legendary Hollywood Bowl with Jamie Cullum & Count Basie Orchestra. Fans and critics have drawn comparisons to the likes of Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, and Rickie Lee Jones. And what these names all share is both an accessibility and a distinctness – that quality people can’t quite pin down.

Depending on what the song calls for, Shepherd always draws upon her roots – be it Salvation Army origins, poetic singer-songwriter lyricism, the modal inflections of world music, simple and sassy pop, infectiously deep hip-hop grooves, or the harmonic complexities of jazz. Her tunes are always a departure from convention; yet one never has the sense of leaving the home she weaves on stage and invites us to be part of.

The Elizabeth Shepherd Trio is:

PETER TOSH 65TH BIRTHDAY

Equal rights was major focus of Artist’s life and work Los Angeles, CA 16 October 2009 – In honor of Reggae superstar Peter Tosh’s 65th birthday on Monday, October 19th, the Tosh family is creating www.officialpetertosh.com, and encouraging Peter Tosh fans around the world to celebrate with the Tosh family by speaking up for equal rights. Tosh’s efforts to bring the attention of the world to oppressed people in every corner of the earth were expressed in many of his hits such as “Mama Africa”, “Equal Rights”, “Fight On,” and “Not Gonna Give It Up”. To commemorate Peter’s 65th birthday celebration, the Tosh family would like to invite fans to visit sites such as Amnesty International at http://www.amnesty.org, ONE.org http://ONE.org , The Human Rights Campaign at www.hrc.org and other organizations that are working to achieve equal rights for all people around the world.

Peter Tosh is one of the most important and influential Reggae artists of all time. He first rose to prominence as a founding member of Bob Marley and the Wailers in 1970, when the group signed to Island Records. That same year, they released the classic reggae albums Catch A Fire and Burnin’. Tosh left the group in 1974, and released his debut solo record, Legalize It in 1976. During his life and prolific career, Tosh was an outspoken supporter of efforts to legalize marijuana. He also was an anti-apartheid activist and an ardent anti- nuclear activist. Peter Tosh’s message is as relevant today as it was when he was alive. Yet, given the current disparity between the poor and wealthy in most of the world, the racism and hate that is sadly still thriving, and the continued proliferation of nuclear weapons, Tosh’s work is not finished.

Please support and honor Peter Tosh’s memory by posting links on your site this Monday, October 19, to ONE.org, which works to forgive debt and develop functional economies in Africa, hrc.org which fights for equal rights for all people, and Amnesty International or a similar organization, and directing visitors to visit www.officialpetertosh.com to find out more about Reggae legend Peter Tosh, his music, and his works.

The band, will also be headlining the Evolve Festival in Nova Scotia, an event which has recently been named by Outside Magazine as “one of the top 25 Outdoor Festivals in North America.”

Since the The New Deal’s beginning, their improvisational interpretation of House, Trance, Breakbeat and Drum’n'Bass has brought traditionally electronic music to the live music scene. The band now find themselves at the forefront of a new genre of music, dubbed “Live Electro”, and have risen to the top of the scene, playing to hundreds of thousands internationally.

The New Deal’s almost eleven-year career has produced nine records, spawned countless Live Electro bands, garnered numerous award nods and continues to inspire an ever-growing audience throughout North America who flock to their sold-out concerts.

Their upcoming hometown Toronto show marks a time in the NEW DEAL’s career where the their sound and showmanship have been taken to a new level. Drawing ever-increasing audiences filled with new faces, this band exemplifies the idea that grassroots popularity can be a truly satisfying slow-burn that never stops growing.

By the time of their Toronto event they will have just returned from their first tour of Japan, sold out shows in Chicago, New York, as well as played a key festival appearance at Red Rocks in Colorado. The band will continue with international touring through the summer and fall, and has plans to push the improvisational envelope with a new live album release in 2010.

The Jimmy Swift Band’s sound is a fusion of the best in both rock and electronic music. The result is a original and stylistic sound that is uniquely their own. Their live show is a frenzy of sweat, blood, dancing, and thrashing – all to hypnotic rhythms and an unrelenting energy that is both addictive and unstoppable.

This June the JSB launch a new live album version of their earlier 2009 DVD release, JSB – Live At The Marquee. Initially available only during performance dates, this new album carries with it all of the excitement and energy that has become known, loved and expected of the JSB across Canada and beyond.

The band is currently in session recording their fourth studio album scheduled for release in the fall of 2009. For this project the band has embraced even further the electronic elements that have always been a big part of their live show’s popularity while holding strong to their love of dirty rock and roll – its Daft Punk on Jaggermeister – Iron Maiden on Ecstasy…

“The band and audience fed off of each other throughout the night making for many dramatic and climactic points. It was high-intensity and JSB never let their energy level drop. By the end of the show the crowd were throwing their arms in the air and you could tell by the dance moves that all inhibitions had been lost. The encore lasted for a half-hour and it was clear that JSB have live shows like no other.” (Exclaim Magazine review of Toronto performance at the Elmocambo – Feb 2009)

The Jimmy Swift Band is truly an anomaly within the music industry – a truly independent band that have forged their own path yet have made a living playing music. On stage their tireless energy has always been focused on the audience – on turning a Saturday night concert into an unforgettable experience. You will likely never see or hear anything like the Jimmy Swift Band anywhere else, and you will never walk away from another show feeling like you did the last time you saw the JSB.
