“It is hard to write something new about the Fat Cats because everything has been written about, discussed, and debated throughout the band’s storied, decade-long history. Begun in 1993 in Hamilton, Ontario, the Fat Cats have changed personnel numerous times throughout the years, but their style, dedication to the scene, and sonic intensity has never wavered since their inception. Built on the solid foundation of Todd Gillies on guitar and lead vocals, Chris Gatchene on guitar and vocals, and Dave Hill on bass, the band has re-created their timeless originals and tasteful covers with many different singers, drummers, and keyboard players over the years while touring Canada and the United States and releasing two fantastic albums, Daredevil and Cruelty’s Cure in the process. With the Fat Cats you get honest, no-bullshit folk rock night after night, regardless if they play a set of originals or an all cover tune set. With their incredible original tunes that beautifully mould rock, folk, country, and bluegrass into pure musical emotion, and constant tributes to The Band, the Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, Buddy Holly and countless others, the Fat Cats are simply fantastic. By playing tunes like the traditional “Breadbox,” their trademark celebratory original “You,” or a beautifully crafted rendition of “Tangled Up In Blue,” the Fat Cats provide what is often lacking in modern popular music–unbridled and passionate emotion. I have seen the band way too many times to count, and will continue to see them as long as they keep playing. To sum it up, the Fat Cats are the quintessential hometown band, and their shows are events where the whole town comes together to toast a band that has been through thick and thin, but still plays with a youthful enthusiasm night after night.

Marco Benevento returns to Toronto on Sunday, October 17, 2010 supported by Toronto’s SoulJazz traveler Elizabeth Shepherd.

The show is a guaranteed jaw dropper for any indie-rock-jazz- head-crossover type. Marco’s truly an original act and very delightful to watch, always attracting new fans and prominent musicians alike, as evident by the artists he plays or has played with, including Stanton Moore, Skerik, Mike Dillon, Bobby Previte, Charlie Hunter, Trey Anastasio and Mike Gordon – some of the best in the business.

The Canadian dates feature Marco’s trio including his acoustic piano amplified with guitar pickups, loops, and other effects. Benevento’s bandmates for the show include Dave Dreiwitz from the prominent American alternative rock group Ween, and drummer Andrew Borger from Tom Waits and Norah Jones.

Marco is also celebrating a new release on The Royal Potato Family. The new album, Between the Needles and Nightfall, is available now on cd, iTunes, and vinyl, including limited edition red vinyl. The CD is very well done and you can sample some tracks at www.myspace.com/marco.benevento, including a very inspiring video clip that highlights some of the magic in the studio (also described in writing below). Check the links after this paragraph for direct video access. Benevento’s quote sheet from his previous release has also been attached for your reference, featuring excerpts from Rolling Stone, NPR Music, The New York Times, and The Washington Post. Expect similar feedback from the new CD.

Elizabeth Shepherd

“Toronto’s Elizabeth Shepherd moves further away from her jazz roots on her third studio album, “Heavy Falls the Night” coming up with a pop-influenced sound that could be her ticket to mainstream crossover in Canada. She’s already had plenty of success in Japan and Europe, but in her home country she’s always been more of a critical darling than a chart-topper.” – Now Magazine

Her multiple industry accolades have landed her 2 Juno nominations (Canada’s Grammy equivalent), tours in Europe and across and North America, Japan, and most recently, a show at the legendary Hollywood Bowl with Jamie Cullum & Count Basie Orchestra. Fans and critics have drawn comparisons to the likes of Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, and Rickie Lee Jones. And what these names all share is both an accessibility and a distinctness – that quality people can’t quite pin down.

It has been Havana Cultura, an ambitious project focusing on contemporary urban Cuba, sponsored by Havana Club, that has had the DJ most fired up of late. Coinciding with the 50th Anniversary of the Revolution and the easing of embargoes on Cuba Gilles visited Havana in June 2009 to record a stunning set of recordings at the legendary Egrem Studios in conjunction with young, virtuoso, pianist and arranger Roberto Fonseca together with a host of young Cuban artists including Ogguere, Obsesión and Danay. Of the older generation, it’s only the mighty Mayra Caridad Valdes, sister of piano legend Chucho, that makes an appearance in the mix. A second volume of awesome club remixes by the likes of Carl Cox, 4hero, MJ Cole, Seiji, Louie Vega and Philippe Cohen Solal from Gotan Project has just dropped to widespread critical acclaim.

GP continues to be a breath of fresh air on the dance floors of the world playing a unique selection of music that is rarely heard elsewhere.

Best-selling Canadian-Australian singer-songwriter Xavier Rudd is set to release his latest studio album, Koonyum Sun, on April 20, 2010 through SaltX Records distributed by Fontana North.

Koonyum Sun marks a fresh musical and spiritual awakening for Rudd, perhaps most notably as it’s his first album with his new incredibly funky rhythm section featuring bassist Tio Moloantoa and percussionist Andile Nqubezelo of the late afro-reggae legend Lucky Dube’s band. Xavier, Tio and Andile formed a bond that extended beyond their musical respect for each other in the summer of 2008 at Austria’s Nuke Festival. This relationship, like their musical tastes, reflects a passion for unifying culture, sound and understanding.

Under the collective banner of Xavier Rudd & Izintaba (Zulu word for mountain), Koonyum Sun sees Rudd moving away from the heavier edged sound pursued on Dark Shades of Blue, and embracing the happier, hip-swinging vibes that have characterized his earlier albums. A matchless mixture of reggae, funk, blues and folk with deep-rooted Australian Aboriginal and South African influences, Koonyum Sun truly showcases the magical connection of this new trio. Inspired by his new band and touched by the spirit of the sun, sand, and sea surrounding the famed 301 studio in Byron Bay where the album was recorded, the release of Koonyum Sun marks one of the most exciting times in the musical journey of Xavier Rudd.

Over the last few years, Rudd has graced stages at festivals around the globe, including the Bonnaroo Music Festival, Ottawa Bluesfest, The Great Escape, Bumbershoot, and Austin City Limits, to list a few. Indeed, where he has been physically has had an immense impact on where he has gone musically. He explains: “I’ve absorbed so much culture and energy from where I’ve traveled, and it becomes a part of me.”

Koonyum Sun is the culmination of where Rudd wants to be musically, and along with Izintaba, he’s ready to make his music mobile once again. “I’ve never been more excited to tour,” he says, and his fans are undeniably ecstatic about his assertion. Xavier Rudd returns to Canada this May after a string of sold-out festival stops in Europe and Australia.

One-man experimentalist That 1 Guy returns to Toronto in support of his new album PACKS A WALLOP!. Produced with famed sound engineer Billy Hume (Nelly, Shop Boyz, Ludacris), PACKS A WALLOP! brings new energy and depth to That 1 Guy’s low frequencies and heavy beats, once described by Relix as “so bombastic, they rattle china cabinets and dissolve kidney stones into the next zip code.”

At up to 200 live shows per year, audiences around the world gather to see this mad scientist at work, as he turns a cowboy boot into an electric instrument, a cello bow into a laser beam. With this latest tour, That 1 Guy adds to an already impressive resume of live shows, which includes performances at Big Day Out, Glastonbury, Monterrey Jazz Festival, Lowlands and other international festivals.

Fans and first-time show-goers alike can expect what The Spokesman calls a “Home Depot meets Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” performance, centered around That 1 Guy’s inventive instrument, the Magic Pipe: a seven-foot tall collection of swiveling pipes, metal gears, bass strings and electronic buttons, all connected by a rainbow of colored-wires. It is music you have to see to believe.

(TORONTO) Jamaican-Canadian Reggae group House of David Gang is excited to be returning to Atlantic Canada for its 2nd Annual Bob Marley Food Drive & Black History Month tour! This 7-show swing honours the life and messages of peace and hope of reggae’s spiritual father, the immortal Bob Marley, who would have turned 65 years old this year.
The House of David Gang has rapidly developed a following on the East Coast; having performed at the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival, Evolve Festival and Salty Jam as well as over a dozen club shows across the Maritimes. They have earned a reputation as one of Canada’s top Roots Reggae outfits.

Robert “Bob” Nesta Marley (February 6, 1945 – May 11, 1981) was a Jamaican musician, singer-songwriter and Rastafarian. He was the lead singer, songwriter and guitarist for the ska, rocksteady and reggae bands: The Wailers (1964 – 1974) and Bob Marley & the Wailers (1974 – 1981). Marley remains the most widely known and revered performer of reggae music, and is credited for helping spread Jamaican music to the worldwide audience.

Marley’s best known hits include “I Shot the Sheriff”, “No Woman, No Cry”, “Exodus”, “Could You Be Loved”, “Stir It Up”, “Jamming”, “Redemption Song”, “One Love” and, together with The Wailers, “”Three Little Birds”, as well as the posthumous releases “Buffalo Soldier” and “Iron Lion Zion”. The compilation album, Legend, released in 1984, three years after his death, is the best-selling reggae album ever (10 times platinum), with sales of more than 12 million copies.

Even today nearly 30 years after his death, the name Bob Marley is recognized by old and young alike around the world. Reggae’s most transcendent and iconic figure, Bob Marley was the first Jamaican artist to achieve international superstardom, in the process introducing the music of his native island nation to the far-flung corners of the globe. Marley’s music gave voice to the day-to-day struggles of the Jamaican experience, vividly capturing not only the plight of the country’s impoverished and oppressed but also the devout spirituality that remains their source of strength.

His songs of faith, devotion, and revolution created a legacy that continues to live on through the music of his extended family as well as generations of artists the world over touched by his genius.

funk band from Toronto. Winners of the 2007 Toronto Independent Music
Award for best live act, the band is well-known for its energized live
performances. Sheena Lyonnais of torontomusicscene.ca writes, “Their
live shows are absolutely mind-blowing; the band is something entirely
unique and influenced by atypical genres, hidden YouTube videos and
unconventional stage line-ups.”

The energy of the band’s live shows flows directly into its new
record. In July 2009, KC Roberts and the Live Revolution released
their second LP titled Parkdale Funk 1: The Pillage of Bloor West
Village, comprising 11 original songs. Independently recorded,
produced and distributed, Parkdale Funk 1 sold 350 copies in its first
weekend. The band’s first music video and a sequel to 2008’s massive
Funk Massacre Halloween party – September 30th at the Horseshoe – are
just two of many big plans for the rest of 2009.

Formed in 2004, KC Roberts and the Live Revolution have enjoyed
consistent success both on stage and in the studio. In 2005, the band
placed in the top 5 in Chartattack.com’s North by Northeast report
card reviews. Later that year they opened for the Black Eyed Peas at
Molson Amphitheatre, making such an impact that they were invited back
in 2006. Since then, KC Roberts and the Live Revolution have
established themselves as a high-energy live act and have become
mainstays at large festivals including the Distillery Jazz Festival
(2007), Beaches Jazz Festival (2007 and 2009), and Wasaga Beachfest
(2009) among others.

Bandleader KC Roberts is a fixture in the Toronto rock, funk, jazz and
gospel scenes as a songwriter, guitarist and vocalist. He has
contributed on stage and in the studio to projects with many
international artists including DJ Z-Trip, 2007 Canadian Idol winner
Brian Melo, and Grammy-nominated gospel artist Martha Munizzi. In
2008, KC was invited to join multi-award winning artists Krystaal in
the studio as well as on their very successful African tour. All of
these experiences have been worked seamlessly into KC’s current work
with the Live Revolution and are highlighted on the band’s new LP,
Parkdale Funk 1: The Pillage of Bloor West Village.
